UPPER WEST SIDE

A busy NYC family requested their UWS Pre-War be made more open and light. Through the deft use of material and paint, and some serious ingenuity in storage solutions they now have a very personal escape where they can gather as a family, hang out with friends, and simply relax together.

  • The inviting, comfortable space also provides opportunities to maintain order in the chaos of apartment living with children. To achieve this, we focused on some key architectural changes that allowed for more storage.

In the Primary Bedroom custom screen-caned widows allow for diffused light during the day while blending seamlessly with the cabinetry housing hampers and linen storage. In a nod to the architecture of the building many of the original doors were kept throughout, but raised for a bit more space, and an imported antique door from Egypt provides visual intrigue in the Primary while complementing the warm neutral palate of the room.

The family also requested some playful elements for the shared and kid’s spaces. In the open kitchen and living room, a colorful blown glass fixture over the island adds a dynamic wink to the space, while whimsical insect sculptures the family first saw in Spain traverse the dividing pillars. The kid’s bath is kept clean and bright, with Bianco Dolomiti marble. In the living room, a Stella light fixture breaks up the ceiling and a nebulous Heather Day painting serves as a tonal thread for the space.
